Barratt selects Brandwells for pioneering zero carbon development

We are working with Barratt Homes on a development at Hanham Hall, Bristol, which is aiming to be the first large scale Carbon Challenge scheme in England, with zero carbon emissions.
The Carbon Challenge is an initiative by the Government to road-test its Code 6 standard for new-build homes – meaning zero carbon emissions. From 2016 all new-build homes must achieve zero carbon. The new Code for Sustainable Homes measures overall sustainability performance against a wide range of environmental criteria including energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, water usage, waste management and minimising ecological impact. Code 6 demands sustainability throughout the building process, from drawing board to final development, and takes in design, materials and construction methods. Brandwells, as a company with already exemplary operational standards, has been chosen by Barratt to help achieve its goals at Hanham Hall.
The Hanham Hall project includes 200 homes, backed by community facilities to facilitate a sustainable way of living. The site will feature its own on-site biomass energy facility, allotments, orchards and cycle facilities. The super-insulated homes will be fitted with the latest energy-saving technology. To meet the exacting standards of the development Brandwells is ensuring that no soil is removed from the site. All waste has to be recycled. Environmental efficiency has to be considered throughout the construction process, from minimizing the impact of travel to site by using local labour to ensuring that all activities are carried out in the most environmentally-friendly way, using energy efficient plant, recycled materials wherever possible and the like.
